AYM (Assisting Young Mothers) is a group home for pregnant and parenting teens and their children. Volunteers come in the evenings to help prepare dinner and share the meal with the residents, engage with the mothers and their children offering encouragement and support, and play with the children while the mothers attend parenting education groups. Volunteers are needed to teach 18th century skills to school age children on Thursday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., in April, May, July and August, and in October and November. Carding and spinning wool, candle dipping, corn pounding, clothes washing and the use of a variety of period toys and games are the most common activities. Training will be provided. Volunteers are needed to hand-split fence rails & clapboards, to help operate the Farm's tractor-powered hydraulic firewood splitter and then move & stack the split wood. Tractor-splitter operators must be at least 21 years old. Adults 18 and over may bring children as young as 12. Loaders & rail/clapboard splitters can be 16 and older, and stackers can be 12 and older. Proper use and safety training will be provided for modern & 18th C. equipment. Individual schedules can be arranged & e-mail notification of occasional log-splitting party dates will be sent out to interested volunteers.

The Teen Center is a drop-in recreational facility for high risk 7th-12th graders. Volunteers initiate conversation and activities with the youth, play games and sports, assist with groups, help cook dinner, and offer homework or computer assistance. Opportunities are weekdays between 3 p.m and 9 p.m.

Tutor/Mentor volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with children in grades 1 through 5 in order to improve their reading skills throughout the school year. Volunteers meet with their child in the evening or weekend in a location the parent/guardian and volunteer agree upon. Volunteers must attend an orientation, one-hour training, undergo a background check and be able to commit to a full calendar year. All children are referred by the Alexandria City Public Schools.
