About the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program

In the summer of 2000, ExxonMobil, in partnership with Volunteer Fairfax, introduced its Community Summer Jobs Program (CSJP) to Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. Founded in 1971, this program provides full-time college students with an eight-week paid summer internship to assist nonprofit organizations and gain experience at agencies with diverse mission areas. CSJP also offers training to organizations for recruiting and selecting interns and provides assistance with organizing their summer internships. ExxonMobil CSJP interns help increase agencies’ capacities while giving students the opportunity to learn more about nonprofit careers.

Grant Application Process

Grant applications are available in October of each year and participating agencies are selected in January. Agencies designated 501(c)(3) by the IRS and located in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. are eligible for the grants.

Once grants have been awarded to the 60 nonprofit organizations, the agencies themselves are responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and hiring their summer interns by April 30, 2010. Interns must be enrolled undergraduates who have completed their freshman year and will be returning to college full-time in the fall of 2010. Students apply directly to the agencies of their choice. Selected agencies and job descriptions will be available on www.volunteerfairfax.org in late January 2010. Agencies are also encouraged to recruit using university websites, job search websites, and other resources.

Agencies that have not previously participated in the Community Summer Jobs Program interested in applying for the 2010 internship cycle must attend the mandatory information session scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, 2009. Previous CSJP applicants and participants, while not required to attend this session, are encouraged to do so to be made aware of any changes to the program.
