  • Alternative Communtiy Service Intern

Title: Alternative Community Service Intern
Reports to: Alternative Community Service Manager
Classification: Intern
Salary: Unpaid

For more than 36 years, Volunteer Fairfax (VF) has been the heart of volunteering in Fairfax County. By matching the skills and interests of volunteers and donors to the needs of local nonprofit organizations, VF helps to build a better community through service. Through a variety of programs, the volunteer center strengthens the capacity of our nonprofit members and offers meaningful volunteer opportunities for our citizens.

Purpose:
As part of Volunteer Fairfax's commitment to promoting volunteerism, the Center administers the Alternative Community Service Program (ACS), which places a broad range of court-ordered clients in community service positions in lieu of a fine or jail term. In 2010, nearly 700 clients completed more than 26,000 hours of service at more than 100 local nonprofit and public agencies. According to the Independent Sector, valuing a volunteer hour at $22.03, ACS clients contributed more than $572,000 to local nonprofits last year.

As Volunteer Fairfax looks to grow the Community Service Program to meet demand, the purpose of this internship is to assist the Alternative Community Service Manager to further develop and strengthen the structure of the program. The intern will assist with client questions pertaining to the AC S Program in person and over the phone, and will also have the opportunity to interact with other non-profits in the DC metro region through research and case management. Based on the intern’s developed proficiency with the program, they may have the opportunity to conduct one on one client interviews for placement.

Commitment:
This position prefers 15-20 hours a week but is negotiable. The intern would work at Volunteer Fairfax, located at 10530 Page Avenue, Fairfax, Virginia 22030. This internship is scheduled to last through the end of Spring Semester 2012 but can be lengthened depending on job performance and intern’s preferences.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Expand the current ACS program including but not limited to:
    • Find new participating agencies for client placement
    • Strengthen existing relationships with attorneys, probation officers and court
    • Reach out to new probation officers and attorneys for new sources or referrals

  • Schedule client intake interviews
  • Field general programmatic questions on the phone and to walk in clients
  • Assist with clients’ case management
  • Potential to interview clients to place them in appropriate locations where they can complete their community service (at the discretion of the ACS Manager)

  • Ease and familiarity with computers including the Windows platform
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
