Communications Intern – Social media and Website


Reports to: Communications Manager
Classification: Intern
Salary: Unpaid

For more than 37 years, Volunteer Fairfax (VF) has been the heart of volunteering in Fairfax County. By matching the skills and interests of volunteers and donors to the needs of local nonprofit organizations, VF helps to build a better community through service. Through a variety of programs, the volunteer center strengthens the capacity of our nonprofit members and offers meaningful volunteer opportunities for our citizens. 

Purpose: 
At Volunteer Fairfax, communications is vital our function. The better we can communicate and gain recognition throughout the community the more we can make an impact.  Currently, Communications is directed by one staff member who manages all aspects of communications, including: social media, promotions, website, as well as radio, TV, and newspaper contacts.  Volunteer Fairfax is seeking an intern to assist in our communication efforts relating to social media and the website, volunteerfairfax.org.

Commitment: 
This position prefers 10-15 hours a week but is negotiable. The intern would work at Volunteer Fairfax, located at 10530 Page Avenue, Fairfax, Virginia 22030, during regular office hours Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.  

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Update Volunteer Fairfax’s Facebook timeline, adding relevant events, milestones and pictures
  • Help to brainstorm ideas to increase engagement with our “followers”
  • Contribute material to use on Volunteer Fairfax’s Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest
  • Research and help implement social media best practices
  • Contribute to Volunteer Fairfax’s blog, writing relevant content and conducting volunteer interviews
  • Assist in making updates to the website, volunteerfairfax.org

Qualifications: 

  • Independent worker and self motivated
  • Demonstrated ability to use Dreamweaver or interest in learning.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, writing)
  • Ease and familiarity with computers including the Windows platform
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Familiarity with social media
  • Prior office experience preferred
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite preferred
  • Outgoing and friendly
  • Must be a team player
  • Responsible and timely

Events Management Intern

Through a variety of programs, the volunteer center strengthens the capacity of nonprofit members and offers meaningful volunteer opportunities for our citizens. 

Overview:                          
We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who is seeking to gain an insight into events management of a small, but growing nonprofit. In this role, you will provide valuable support and will be carrying out tasks individually, and as part of a team. Interested candidate should be a self-starter who is able to work on her/his own initiative and will be comfortable carrying out routine tasks as well as using flair and creativity to bring fresh ideas to the team. The internship offers real-world communications experience.

The hours for the position are negotiable, typically 15-20 hours a week.  The intern would work at Volunteer Fairfax, located at 10530 Page Avenue, Fairfax, VA, 22030.

Purpose:                             
This experience will provide the opportunity to assist the Special Events Department with a variety of community events, including an annual awards program, community service day and fundraiser. In addition, the selected intern will learn valuable skills in event coordination, time management, multi-tasking and communication, as well as gain an understanding of nonprofit and volunteer events.

Volunteer Fairfax hosts approximately 25 events throughout the year associated with the following programs:

  • Business Link - planning and executing custom service projects for corporations.
  • VolunteerFest® - Held in conjunction with National Make a Difference Day. Engages more than 1,000 volunteers at Fairfax County nonprofits the 4th Saturday of each October.
  • VolRUNteer 5K and Fun Run- VF’s annual fundraiser where in addition to the 5K, runners, friends and family will be asked to “lend a helping hand” by bringing mittens and gloves to donate to participating hypothermia shelters.
  • Give Together: A Family Volunteer Day – Held on MLK Day, families can learn about local nonprofits while completing age-appropriate service projects in one central location.
  • Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards – each April VF recognizes volunteers in Fairfax County.  Nominees and award winners are recognized at a breakfast ceremony. 
  • ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program- summer internship program designed to encourage college students to explore nonprofit careers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support in the coordination of collateral materials including such items as: invitations, event programs, nametags, table assignments, marketing materials, etc.
  • Assist with preparation and reporting for board meetings.
  • Assist with outreach to government officials. 
  • Assist in the maintenance of database management documenting participation, attendance, financial support and special needs.
  • Assist in identifying and procuring needed project supplies.
  • Assist in requesting in-kind donations and services.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating the special event calendar and inventory of supplies on hand to support center work.
  • Media Relations

Qualifications: 

  • Creativity is a must!
  • Competency in Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint 
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • Must be able to work effectively as a key support team member
  • Must be precise, alert and attentive to details
  • Must be a team player;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
