1. What's the purpose of the intake interview?
Clients are required to come to Volunteer Fairfax for a one-time intake appointment. During the appointment, clients are placed at an agency, and ACS staff explains the rules of the program. To set up an appointment, please call 703-246-3893.

2. How long does the appointment take?
The appointment should not take more than half an hour.

3. How will I be placed?
Clients are placed based on where they live, when they are available and what language they speak. If you have any special conditions that should be taken into account when being assigned to an agency, please inform ACS staff at the beginning of the interview.

4. What kinds of places will I do hours?
Clients complete hours at a variety of different agencies, such as thrift shops, parks, recreation centers, churches and other nonprofit agencies. Clients are not permitted to complete their hours with a for-profit business.

5. What are the fees?
Court-referred clients must pay a $70 processing fee. Pretrial (attorney-referred) clients must pay a $75 administrative fee.

6. What if I can't pay today?
Clients who cannot pay on the day of their appointment are given up to two weeks to mail in the payment.

7. How can I pay?
Volunteer Fairfax accepts only cash or money order. Personal checks and credit/debit card payments are not permitted.

8. Where can I get a money order?

9. Can I just pay a fine and avoid doing community service?
Clients who elect to take part in this program are past the point of being able to pay a fine.

11. Why do I have to pay to volunteer?
The administrative fee covers Volunteer Fairfax's cost for administering clients' community service. This includes the intake appointment, the referral and follow-up action required to report hours to the referring entity.

12. Didn't I pay the fee at court?
No. Any money paid at the court was imposed by the court, not Volunteer Fairfax.

13. What happens when I'm finished with my hours?
When you finish your hours, you must notify Volunteer Fairfax. ACS staff will verify the completion of the hours and file the completion or termination letter directly with the court, ASAP, attorney, probation officer or other referring entity.

14. Can others perform my community service for me?
No. It's absolutely prohibited for others to perform community service hours in the place of clients. This is considered forgery and the supervisors are well aware of this.

15. I volunteer regularly. Can I count those hours?
Clients are permitted to do their hours with any nonprofit, religious or government agency with prior approval of ACS staff. If the client's placement is approved, any hours done after the client's referral date (court date in which the client was instructed to do hours) can be credited to the client's case. Hours done before the referral date cannot count towards a client's case.

16. How can I get an extension on the due date for my hours?
Extensions are granted on a case-by-case basis and are at the sole discretion of ACS staff. To receive an extension, clients must have completed a majority of the required hours by the due date and have a valid reason for not being able to finish on time. Clients should be prepared to describe how they will finish their hours within a reasonable time frame. The request for an extension should be made before the due date for hours. If clients are unable to finish their hours because the assigned agency is unable to accommodate their schedule, this should be brought to the attention of ACS staff as soon as the issue is raised by the agency.

17. Can I finish my hours the day before my next court date?
No. Volunteer Fairfax is a private agency; therefore Volunteer Fairfax's computer systems are not connected to the court's. Completion letters are walked over to the court and physically submitted. If Volunteer Fairfax does not submit the paperwork at least one week in advance, the client's paperwork cannot be processed in time.

18. The judge said I have one year to finish my hours. Why did Volunteer Fairfax give me a few months?
The due date for clients' hours is based on how many hours a client is ordered to complete and how long it will take to finish if a client works the required six hours per week. This is done for two reasons: The first is to ensure that clients are taking the program seriously and are making a good faith effort to complete the hours. The second reason is a courtesy to agencies where clients are placed, to ensure that they can rely on clients to complete their tasks efficiently.

19. What happens if I don't finish my hours?
The maximum penalty for misdemeanor crimes in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a $2,500 fine and one year in jail. Sentencing is at the discretion of the adjudicating judge.

20. Can I count hours that I've promised to the agency?
Absolutely not. Under no circumstances are clients to take credit for hours promised in the future. This is considered forgery and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

21. My case was terminated with Volunteer Fairfax, but the judge granted me more time. What's the next step?
The court does not notify Volunteer Fairfax when cases are reinstated into the program. Until the client informs Volunteer Fairfax that a continuance has been granted, the client's case remains closed. ACS staff will not contact any agency to verify hours unless instructed to do so by the client. Clients should be aware that if they are granted reinstatement by the court, they may have to pay an additional administrative fee.

22. What types of charges does Volunteer Fairfax NOT accept?
Volunteer Fairfax does not accept client with the following charges: sexual, violent or concealed weapons. Volunteer Fairfax retains the right to refuse cases and clients for any reason.

23. Can I do my hours with multiple organizations?
Volunteer Fairfax permits clients to complete their hours with multiple organizations on a case-by-case basis. Prior approval must be received from ACS staff before working with more than one agency. Volunteer Fairfax discourages clients from working with more than one agency because this increases the likelihood that ACS staff will not be able to verify that all that hours were completed, which could result in termination from the program and possible criminal conviction.

24. Can Volunteer Fairfax request a continuance from the court for me?
No. If clients need to request a continuance from the court, this must be done by the client himself or by an appropriate agent of the client (eg. an attorney). Volunteer Fairfax cannot stand in court for a client under any circumstance.

25. I can't get a hold of my volunteer coordinator. What should I do?
Clients are encouraged to continue attempting to get in contact with their referred agency before requesting a different agency. For best results, clients should call their agencies during regular business hours. Be patient before requesting a new agency.

26. Can I transfer my community service to another area?
Volunteer Fairfax does not transfer cases, even if the client's ASAP program transfers. Clients may do their hours wherever they live. Volunteer Fairfax grants phone interviews to clients who live outside of the Washington D.C., Metro region, and will coordinate administration of the case via phone, fax, mail and e-mail.

27. Do I get a copy of my timesheet?
No. The timesheet will be faxed directly to the supervisor at the agency along with the referral letter. However, it is strongly recommended that clients keep track of their own hours on a separate piece of paper to avoid any discrepancies.

28. I have two cases that require me to perform community service. If I perform hours for one case, can they count for the other case as well?
No. In this instance, clients would need to complete the combined number of hours from the two cases.

29. My lawyer says I do not have to enroll in the program and I can find my own service, but Volunteer Fairfax sent me a letter. What should I do?
Many attorneys are not familiar with the process. Clients who elect to circumvent the program do so at their own risk. Volunteer Fairfax will file a termination letter directly with the court if the client chooses not to enroll.

30. I'm away at school and can't start my hours until the semester is over. Will I be penalized?
University students are encouraged to begin their hours during the semester wherever they go to school. If this is not possible, the ACS coordinator may permit the client to make other arrangements. Failure to discuss options with the ACS coordinator will result in termination.

31. Do you have a special program or policy for people with busy schedules and/or children?
No. Volunteer Fairfax cannot negotiate the number of hours assigned by the court. Clients must perform the full number of hours without exception. While we do our best to accommodate clients' schedules, clients may be expected to alter their schedule to complete the program successfully.

Los clientes completarán sus horas en alguna de las diferentes agencias; por ejemplo tiendas de segunda mano, parques públicos, centros de recreo, iglesias u otras agencias sin fin lucro. No se permite a los clientes hacer las horas con un negocio. Arriba
5. ¿Cuánto tengo que pagar?
Los clientes referidos por la corte tienen que pagar un costo de procesamiento u honorarios de $70. Los clientes que hacen el servicio previo al juicio (referidos por abogado) tienen que pagar un costo de procesamiento u honorarios de $75. Arriba
6. ¿Qué pasa si no puedo pagar hoy día?

Volunteer Fairfax acepta solamente efectivo u orden de dinero. No se acepta cheques personales ni tarjetas de crédito ó débito. Arriba
8. ¿Dónde puedo conseguir un giro de cheque (money order)?
Se puede comprar un giro de cheque (money order) en cualquier 7-11, banco, Wal-Mart o cualquier supermercado. Por favor asegure que llene el giro de cheque correctamente. Arriba
9. ¿Puedo solamente pagar una multa en vez de hacer servicio comunitario?
Clientes quien elijen participar en este programa ya han pasado el punto de tener el habilidad de pagar una multa. Clientes no pueden hacer una donación de objetos ni de dinero en vez de completar las horas. Arriba
10. ¿Puedo hacer una donación de dinero o cosas en vez de hacer servicio comunitario?
No, clientes no pueden donar nada en vez de hacer las horas. Arriba
11. ¿Por qué tengo que pagar para hacer servicio voluntario?
El costo administrativo cubre los costos de Volunteer Fairfax por la administración del servicio comunitario del cliente. Esto incluye la cita inicial, la referencia y los requisitos para reportar las horas a la entidad apropiada. Arriba

Los clientes están permitidos hacer horas con agencias sin fines lucrativos, agencias religiosas o agencias gubernamentales, pero solo con la aprobación del gerente de ACS. Si la agencia es aprobada, cualquieras horas cumplida después de la fecha de referencia (la fecha en que la corte se mandó estas horas) pueden ser acreditados al caso del cliente. 16. ¿Cómo puedo recibir un extensión con la fecha de vencimiento de mis horas?
Exenciones son concedidas dependiendo en el caso, y son dados a la discreción del gerente de ACS. Para recibir una extensión, clientes tienen que haber completado la mayoridad de las horas requeridas y tener una razón válida por no haber completado las horas a tiempo. Clientes deben describir cómo van a terminar sus horas dentro de un tiempo razonable. La petición para una extensión debe ser hecha antes de la fecha de vencimiento. Si no se puede completar las horas porque la agencia asignada no puede acomodar su horario, esto debe ser mencionado al gerente de ACS tan pronto que llegue a ser un problema. Arriba
17. ¿Puedo completar mis horas el día antes de mi fecha de corte?
No. Volunteer Fairfax es una agencia privada y las computadoras no están conectadas con a las del corte. Cartas de finalización son entregadas a corte en persona. Si Volunteer Fairfax no sumita los documentos por lo menos una semana en adelante, los documentos del cliente no pueden ser procesado a tiempo. Arriba

La fecha de vencimiento de las horas es basada en cuantas horas el cliente es ordenado a completar y cuanto tiempo se tomará si el cliente trabaja el requisito de seis horas por semana. Tenemos esta regla por dos razones: La primera es para asegurar que los clientes tomen el programa enserio y traten de hacer un esfuerzo para completar las horas. La segunda razón es para demostrar cortesía a las agencias en donde fueron puestos los clientes, para asegurar que pueden depender en los clientes para completar las tareas en una manera eficiente. 19. ¿Qué pasará si no termino mis horas?

22. ¿Cuales cargos no se acepta Volunteer Fairfax?

26. ¿Puedo transferir mi servicio comunitario a otra área?
Volunteer Fairfax no transfiere casos aún si el programa de ASAP del cliente transfiere. Los clientes pueden completar las horas donde viven. 29. Mi abogado me dijo que no tengo que desarrollarme en el programa y puedo encontrar mi propia agencia, pero Volunteer Fairfax me mandó una carta. ¿Qué debo hacer?
Muchos abogados no son familiares con el proceso. Los clientes que deciden burlar el programa corren un riesgo. Volunteer Fairfax mandará una carta de terminación directo con la corte si el cliente no se desarrolle. Arriba
30. Soy estudiante en la universidad, y no puedo hacer mis horas hasta el fin del semestre. ¿Me va a penalizar?
Se recomienda que los estudiantes traten de empezar las horas durante el semestre mientras de asistir la escuela. Si eso no es posible, el gerente del programa puede permitir a los clientes hacer otros planes. Si el cliente no hable con el gerente del programa para hacer estos planes, se terminará el caso sin éxito. Arriba
31. ¿Tiene una programa especial para personas ocupadas/padres?
No. Volunteer Fairfax no puede negociar las horas asignadas de la corte. Clientes tienen que hacer todas las horas, sin excepción. Tratamos acomodar los horarios de los clientes, pero es posible que los clientes tendrán que cambiar sus horarios para completar el programa con éxito. Arriba
