What is CSJP?
In the summer of 2000, ExxonMobil, in partnership with Volunteer Fairfax, introduced its Community Summer Jobs Program (CSJP) to D.C. and Northern Virginia. Founded in 1971, this program provides full-time college students with an eight-week paid summer internship to assist nonprofit organizations and gain experience at agencies with diverse mission areas. CSJP also offers training to organizations for recruiting and selecting interns and provides assistance with organizing their summer internships. ExxonMobil CSJP interns help increase agencies' capacities while also giving students the opportunity to learn more about nonprofit careers.
What is Volunteer Fairfax's role in CSJP?
Volunteer Fairfax administers the Community Summer Jobs Program for ExxonMobil. From the agency application and selection process to the summer intern programs, activities, and evaluation process, Volunteer Fairfax is the "face-to-face" contact with the organizations.
How do I spell ExxonMobil?
ExxonMobil is often misspelled! If you are simply using the name, it is one word, "ExxonMobil." When referring to the corporation, please use three words, "Exxon Mobil Corporation." Please note that there is no "e" at the end of "Mobil."
Who is eligible to participate?
Interns come from across the country to participate in the Community Summer Jobs Program. Full-time undergraduate students who will be full-time sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the fall are eligible for this program. Graduate students are not eligible.
When will the application be available? Where can I get one? How do I apply?
Once selections are announced in February, interns apply directly to organizations in which they are interested. Internship and agency contact information will be available at www.volunteerfairfax.org in February. Volunteer Fairfax does not provide any formal application and any applications received at the Volunteer Fairfax office will not be considered. The application requirements are on a per agency basis. Contact the agency directly for specific requirements. Usually the organizations require, at the minimum, a cover letter and resume.
May interns participate more than once in CSJP?
Yes, an intern may participate in CSJP multiple years, provided s/he is employed at a different organization than the previous year(s).
Is housing provided?
Housing is not provided, but agencies will be provided with housing options to share with potential interns.
What is required of interns once they are hired?
Interns are required to attend a Kick-off Reception held in Fairfax (June), the Professional Development Seminar (June) held at Exxon Mobil Corporation offices, and one service project (choose between one in June and one in July) organized by Volunteer Fairfax. Interns must work a minimum of 35 hours per week over an eight-week period.
