In 2008, Volunteer Fairfax received a generous grant from Fairfax County Public Schools to create, test, and implement a service-learning curriculum in the after-school programs of all 26 Fairfax County Middle Schools. The After-School Service-Learning Program uses separate teaching modules to focus on three main issue areas: The Environment, The Homeless and The Hungry, and Multiculturalism and Tolerance. Each module includes information about the issue, primary source materials, in-class activities and projects, and the building blocks for students to design and carry out their own service projects.
The After-School Service-Learning Program will not only teach students about issues affecting Fairfax County, it will help them to see the value of volunteerism and civic engagement. Most of all, it will teach that individuals of all ages have the power to have a positive impact on their community through service.
The pilot program was carried out in the spring of 2009 at Holmes Middle School in Alexandria, Va. All middle schools will have the necessary tools to implement this program by late Fall 2009. To inquire about this program, please contact Christine Coffey, Special Events/Program Coordinator.
