When disaster strikes, first responders such as fire fighters, police officers and medical staff are on the job. But what happens when the dust settles and the clean-up begins? Then it becomes the responsibility of dedicated volunteers to clear debris, distribute water and hand out blankets. Community members are needed to help coordinate these spontaneous volunteers. These individuals comprise the Volunteer Mobilization Leadership Team (VMLT), a group of people who assist in an emergency by organizing and deploying volunteers to agencies through a Volunteer Mobilization Center in Fairfax County.
Volunteers will be needed to help in various ways throughout the county. Special skills are a bonus but not a requirement. Volunteers may answer county hotline phones, work in the Volunteer Fairfax office, distribute food and water, serve as a project coordinator, work with case management agencies, or remove debris.
The Volunteer Mobilization Leadership Team are not first responders. They are volunteers who have made themselves available to be called on in the event they are needed in the county's recovery effort.
Volunteer Fairfax holds ongoing trainings for the VMLT at its office. If you are interested in attending, please contact Matthew Lyttle.
