What is CSJP?
In the summer of 2000, ExxonMobil, in partnership with Volunteer Fairfax, introduced its Community Summer Jobs Program (CSJP) to D.C. and Northern Virginia. Founded in 1971, this program provides full-time college students with an eight-week paid summer internship to assist nonprofit organizations and gain experience at agencies with diverse mission areas. CSJP also offers training to organizations for recruiting and selecting interns and provides assistance with organizing their summer internships. ExxonMobil CSJP interns help increase agencies' capacities while also giving students the opportunity to learn more about nonprofit careers.
What is Volunteer Fairfax's role in CSJP?
Volunteer Fairfax administers the Community Summer Jobs Program for ExxonMobil. From the agency application and selection process to the summer intern programs and activities and evaluation process, Volunteer Fairfax is the "face-to-face" contact with the organizations.
How do I spell ExxonMobil?
ExxonMobil is often misspelled! If you are simply using the name, it is one word, "ExxonMobil." When referring to the corporation, please use three words, "Exxon Mobil Corporation." Please note that there is no "e" at the end of "Mobil."
Which agencies are eligible to participate?
Agencies must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations located in Northern Virginia or Washington, D.C. Individuals are ineligible. Agencies must also attend a mandatory information session, held each October at the Exxon Mobil Corporation offices in Fairfax. To inquire as to whether a representative of your agency has attended this session in the past, please e-mail CSJP staff. Previous participants, while not required, are encouraged to attend.
When will the application be available? Where can I get one?
Agencies interested in applying must attend a mandatory information seminar in October to be eligible to apply. Applications are available on the Volunteer Fairfax website as of the October seminar. This year, the application will go live on October 4, 2011. Both the online and physical copies of the application is due December 9, 2011 by 4 p.m. and agencies are notified of selection in January. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
Our agency is outside the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia area. Are we eligible?
Unfortunately, only agencies in Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia are eligible. Northern Virginia includes Fairfax and Arlington Counties, the City of Arlington, the City of Alexandria, and parts of Loudoun and Prince William Counties.
Will my agency be assigned an intern?
Once selected, agencies are required to hire their own intern. Volunteer Fairfax will offer assistance with the process, but the hiring is the responsibility of the organization.
Are there any other requirements of the grant?
Accepted agencies are required to attend an orientation session at the Exxon Mobil Corporation offices in Fairfax on February 8, to hire their intern and submit necessary paperwork by April 26, 2012, to attend a Kick-off Reception held in June, and to require their intern to attend the Professional Development Seminar (June) and one service project (choose one between three events in June and July) organized by Volunteer Fairfax. Interns must work a minimum of 35 hours per week over an eight-week period.
May our agency pay the intern as an independent contractor?
No, agencies must hire the interns as paid staff, subject to FICA.
Are graduate students eligible?
No, only undergraduate students may participate in this program.
Our intern last year was great. Can we select him/her as our CSJP intern again this year?
No. Interns may participate in CSJP more than once, but not with their previous agency.
How many years in a row can our agency receive the CSJP grant?
Agencies may receive the grant up to four years in a row, but then must 'sit out' for one year before they are eligible.
