In 2024 alone, Sallie Lyons contributed approximately 500 volunteer hours, adding to a remarkable legacy of over 20 years of dedicated service to historic preservation, archaeology, and education in Fairfax County. Her passion for preserving the rich and layered history of the Mount Vernon District spans more than five decades, during which she has been a driving force behind key initiatives and institutions that continue to benefit the community today.

Sallie co-founded the Mount Vernon Regional Historical Society and the Friends of Fairfax County Archaeology and Cultural Resources (FOFA), organizations that promote regional history through public education, outreach, and support for archaeological work. Her work with FOFA has provided essential financial and volunteer support for the County’s archaeology program, while her involvement with the Lorton Heritage Society further reflects her commitment to preserving local heritage.

Her 20-year service on the Fairfax County History Commission included major contributions to the Inventory of Historic Sites and the County’s annual History Conference—both of which help document, preserve, and share Fairfax County’s diverse past. Her efforts have inspired generations of volunteers and historians while creating lasting platforms for public engagement.

A particularly impactful project includes Sallie’s collaboration with Shiloh Baptist Church and Gunston Hall to research the pre-Civil War free Black community on Mason Neck. This work has helped elevate underrepresented stories and brought new understanding to a significant chapter in local history, engaging residents, students, and scholars alike.

Sallie’s leadership has continually focused on expanding access to history and fostering inclusive storytelling. Through public seminars, tabling events, and institutional partnerships, she has made historic preservation a shared community value. Her tireless volunteer service has deepened cultural awareness, protected important archaeological sites, and built a legacy of civic pride throughout the Mount Vernon District and beyond.

Sallie Lyons is a truly deserving honoree whose lifelong dedication continues to shape the future of historic education and preservation in Fairfax County.

“Having worked alongside Sallie for many years, I know she is passionate and committed to uncovering, preserving and sharing the whole story of our community’s past and present. Through her decades of dedicated service, she has not only preserved our history but helped write her story into the fabric of the Mount Vernon District. Her leadership, determination and kind presence inspire all of us who care deeply about where we come from and who we are as a community.”
