Great Falls Community
The Great Falls Trailblazers have been a dedicated force in preserving and expanding safe, accessible trails in the Great Falls community since 1999. Their mission is to develop scenic, multipurpose trails that allow residents to walk, run, bike, or ride without relying on vehicles, while maintaining the area’s natural beauty and semi-rural character.
Through hands-on stewardship, the Trailblazers have cleared and maintained miles of natural trails by removing weeds, trimming branches, cutting grass, and restoring pathways. They have played a key role in connecting trail segments, including efforts along Georgetown Pike, helping residents move safely through the community. Their approach prioritizes environmental preservation, carefully designing trails that wind around existing trees, and protect surrounding greenery.
Beyond their direct work, the Trailblazers have built a culture of community involvement. They partner with local organizations such as Boy Scouts, the Young Men’s Service League, and homeowners’ associations to identify and complete trail projects. They have also supported initiatives such as safe routes to school and encouraged broader participation in environmental stewardship.
Over the years, the organization has secured nearly $2 million in grants to support trail development and has led or contributed to numerous projects, including the Lucy Hanes Trail and the Cross County Trail. They have also sponsored annual stream cleanups and received recognition from the Potomac Trail Council for their contributions.
In addition to their infrastructure and environmental work, the Trailblazers host an annual Fourth of July 5K Fun Run, bringing together hundreds of participants to celebrate community and the natural landscape. Their sustained leadership continues to enhance connectivity, safety, and quality of life in Great Falls.
“For 27 years, the Great Falls Trailblazers have championed safe and environmentally conscious trails throughout the Great Falls community. The group has dedicated countless hours to clearing, maintaining, and improving local trails. Beyond this physical labor, they have been steady advocates working to support Fairfax County’s active transportation efforts. They have also organized opportunities for community members to get involved in these efforts and to enjoy the natural beauty of Great Falls. I am happy to recognize the Great Falls Trailblazers for their efforts to enrich the quality of life in Great Falls.”
