Volunteer Fairfax announces Interim Chief Executive Officer 

(January 6, 2023 – Fairfax, Virginia) – The Volunteer Fairfax (VF) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph Cattaneo (Joe) as Interim Chief Executive Officer.

As interim executive leader, Joe will fulfill all CEO responsibilities in collaboration with VF staff as well as VF Board and Committees. Joe has begun the onboarding process and is developing a workplan to serve the interim needs of the VF organization, Fairfax County, nonprofit partners, and volunteers.

Joe brings diverse experience across corporate and nonprofit sectors with a history of volunteerism and deep connections to the local community. He has 30 years of executive-level nonprofit trade association experience and is currently principal for Packaging & Recycling Communication Resources in Fairfax County, Virginia. Prior to his current role, Joe was CEO of the Glass Packaging Institute, a trade association with $2.5 million in revenues, for a decade before retiring. He later served as interim CEO for a year during a leadership transition providing guidance and helping recruit a permanent CEO.

Joe’s expertise includes public policy, marketing and communications, public relations, and administrative management. He has served the American Red Cross in several capacities over 11 years and has remained active as a Fairfax County Volunteer Community Leader, Volunteer Intake Leader, and most recently as a Biomed Engagement Leader. Joe currently serves as President, American Red Cross Retiree Association, Greater Washington-Baltimore Group. From 2020-2022, he was the Community Affairs Committee Chair for the University Club and its foundation in Washington D.C. Joe has also volunteered with Greater DC Cares, Food and Friends, DC Central Kitchen, IONA Senior Citizens’ food delivery program, and Arlington Food Assistance Center. He is a former Captain in the US Army having served as an Infantry and Artillery Officer, and later in the Army Reserves and National Guard. Joe received his MA in Urban Affairs and BA in Political Science from Saint Louis University.

The VF Board is excited to have Joe serve in an interim capacity as the organization continues implementing its transition plan and finding a permanent executive leader. VF is committed more than ever to advancing its mission of building community through volunteerism in Fairfax County and across the Greater Washington D.C. area.
