“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

2026 MLK Day of Service – Your Impact

On January 19, 2026, nearly 800 community members and 14 partner organizations banded together to complete 15 service projects and activities in order to address some critical issues such as food insecurity, family support, elder care, environmental stewardship, mental health, and emergency preparedness. It was a remarkable day of service honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After completing the projects below, participants ended at Volunteer Fairfax’s “Reflection Station” to decorate door hangers to take home and serve as a reminder of Martin Luther King Jr.’s message, “Everyone can be great, because anyone can serve”.

This day would not have been possible without dedicated partners, volunteers, and community leaders. Thank you for turning service into action and honoring MLK’s vision through collective impact.

Volunteerism has long been a powerful force for good—bringing people together to lend their time, talents, and compassion to serve others. Yet recently, we have seen a shift to fewer people showing up, disconnected virtual volunteering, and an emphasis on seeking results over relationships. This conversation is an opportunity to re-invigorate volunteering by bringing it back to its original roots in mutual care, stronger connections and shared community growth. We explored how volunteering can go beyond helping others to become a true “transformative service” in building the community: where everyone contributes, everyone belongs, and a stronger, more trusting community emerges. We looked at examples from across the country and here in Fairfax County, Virgina. The conversations first hour were hosted by Frederick Riley of Weave: The Social Fabric Project at Aspen Institute. The second hour was hosted by Levon Williams of Rooted in Equity.
