“ITC is proud to serve as the presenting sponsor of the Volunteer Fairfax Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service. The spirit of service is deeply ingrained in our organization, and we are honored to support events like this that offer individuals, students, and families the opportunity to give back to their local communities. Days like these are a powerful reminder of how we can all contribute to positive change and make a meaningful impact,” says Greg Fitzgerald, CEO of ITC Federal and Martin Luther King, Jr. Week of Service Presenting Supporter.
Volunteer Fairfax’s family-friendly volunteer event took place on January 25, 2025 and is designed to engage families with children and teens ages 5–18 in service learning. This year, nearly 400 volunteers completed service projects for several community nonprofits supporting food insecurity, elder care, family services, emergency management, active-duty military, animal welfare, and other causes.
For this year’s edition, many projects were completed including:
- 1,400 Student Emergency Preparedness Kits were packed for Fairfax County’s Department of Emergency Management and Security (DEMS).
- Fairfax County Government’s Department of Family Services (DFS) led the charge to pack 300 hygiene / care packages for residents of Birmingham Green and write cards for them. Birmingham Green provides high-quality and affordable senior living care to residents and their families in Northern Virginia. DFS also designed 180 Build-a-Bears for children experiencing trauma in Fairfax County.
- 300 Snowman Cups (with warm gloves and fruit snacks) were made for Kids Give Back and given to Shelter House and Second Story to those experiencing homelessness. Kids Give Back also crafted 200 suncatchers to brighten the rooms of hospitalized children to be distributed by Sweet Julia Grace Foundation and spearheaded a project to make 100 pillowcases for Operation Gratitude to deliver to active-duty military personnel.
- Made 150 “I Spy Bottles” designed to help provide developmental tools to CRi residents with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Hidden Oaks Nature Center taught volunteers how to make 400 bird nesting material dispensers to support local birds during the winter and the upcoming breeding season.
- 100 care packages were created for Capital Caring Health to distribute to residents in hospice care.
- Educate Fairfax led the packing of 300 afterschool snack bags for four FCPS Title I Middle Schools.
- 600 snack packs were put together for She Believes in Me who serves 350 kids a month who are experiencing extreme hardship and/or trauma.
All of that was only possible, thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the service of our community volunteers. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”. Through Volunteer Fairfax’s signature event, MLK Jr. Week of Service, we seek to answer this question and honor King’s legacy by uniting the community through the Give Together event.
The success of the event was possible because of the support of companies like ITC Federal, community involvement and loyalty as well as the ongoing hard work of nonprofit and agency partners. So, thank you, and we hope to see you again at next year’s edition to keep up the excellent work we have been doing for our community.
