Joe Cattaneo
Interim CEO

Joe Cattaneo has 30 years of executive-level nonprofit trade association experience with the glass packaging and recycling sector. He is currently principal for Packaging & Recycling Communication Resources in Fairfax County, Virginia assisting manufacturers, suppliers, and consulting practices such as Deloitte to navigate the competitive landscape, analyze financial risk, and implement sustainable practices. Prior to his current role, Joe was CEO of the Glass Packaging Institute – a $2.5M trade association – for a decade before retiring. He later served as interim CEO for a year during a leadership transition providing much needed guidance to stabilize financial, program, and membership issues and help recruit a permanent CEO. Joe brings a wealth of C-suite experience in public policy, marketing and communications, external public relations, and administrative management.

Joe has extensive expertise with the American Red Cross serving in several capacities over 11 years:  disaster relief assignments; safety services; field auditing and community management (including capital campaign financial development); loaned executive for the United Way; and, blood collection drive coordinator. He has remained active with the American Red Cross-National Capital Region as a Fairfax County Volunteer Community Leader, Volunteer Intake Leader, and Biomed Engagement Leader, and currently serves as the 2022-23 President, American Red Cross Retiree Association, Greater Washington-Baltimore Group. From 2020-2022, Joe was the Community Outreach Chair for the University Club and its foundation in Washington DC. Joe’s other volunteer activities have included stints with Greater DC Cares, Food and Friends, DC Central Kitchen, IONA Senior Citizens’ food delivery program, and Arlington Food Assistance Center. Joe is a former Captain in the US Army having served as an Infantry and Artillery Officer, and later in the Army Reserves and National Guard. Joe received his Master’s in Urban Affairs and Bachelor’s in Political Science from Saint Louis University. Joe lives in McLean, Virginia and is the proud father of two adult children, Elizabeth and Max.
