“She would give others the world, if she could.”
A Food for Others and CASA volunteer has been recognized by the Washingtonian magazine as a Washingtonian of the Year. Hecda Cuadros (second from left) possesses the remarkable ability to connect with anyone she meets, and she uses that gift to help Hispanic children at not one, but two nonprofits. At Food for Others (FFO), where Hecda has volunteered for over four years, she bridges the language gap for families during the often-daunting intake process. “Hecda makes everyone who walks through our doors feel cared for,” says Nikki Clifford, FFO Volunteer and Operations Manager. Hecda has also dedicated herself to improving the lives of abused and neglected children; she began volunteering with Fairfax Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) in 2009. Her warm personality and bilingual skills are a tremendous asset for CASA. Supervisor Veronica Brandt notes that “family members treat Hecda like an insider. Hecda’s dedication shows: in 2010, she donated a combined total of 250 hours to FFO and CASA, while still working in her family business. If you too have language or cultural skills consider finding an opportunity that fits your interests through Integrete, Volunteer Fairfax’s Hispanic recruitment campaign.
